Description
I'll be the first to admit that this play doesn't really look like much, but it's actually one of my best new running plays in terms of rate of success. I think that the 3 wide receivers and lack of a fullback make defenses think pass first, and the fact that having two halfbacks makes runs in either direction a possibility make defenders cover in both directions. The halfback lead block is reasonably effective, and combined with two WR blocks a quick runner has a chance to take the ball just off tackle or stretch it out wide. Good blocking WRs are a key ingredient to this play.
The beauty of having two halfbacks at equal splits is really showcased here. The Playmaker feature allows the play to be flipped seamlessly, from the right HB lead blocking for the left HB to the right side to the left HB lead blocking for the right HB to the left side (you may want to back up and read that again). The slot flanker can be motioned to left side to help out in blocking, or this motion can instead be used as a decoy to draw the defense away from the true target lane over on the right. With such simple yet effective options, Inside Sprint will likely grow on you quickly.

Blocking Assessment
This run is about as simple as it looks. Quick execution is key, as the right HB and flanker probably aren't stout enough to hold back rushing linebackers for long. The best lane is most often just off right tackle, behind the HB lead block. However, don't be afraid to take the quick cutback through the middle of the line if it opens up. Likewise, with good blocking WRs there should be occasional chances to make the corner wide to the right. A fast ball carrier is quite handy here. The general rule to remember with this play is to take what the defense gives you.
Analysis
Pros:
- Easy to execute running play with surprisingly high success rate
- Perfect Playmaker ability thanks to dual HBs
- Can find holes both inside and outside
Cons:
- Not much blocking power makes it difficult to blast through defenses playing straight up against the run
- Has a difficult time outrunning fast OLBs
- Relies a fair amount on surprise and catching defenders off guard
